Thousands set to hit the streets for Australia’s biggest Vegan Day Out

Off the back of Australia’s most successful Veganuary uptake, the biannual Vegan Day Out festival is set to be the biggest ever with thousands to hit the streets of major cities on Saturday 9 March and Sunday 10 March 2019.

More than 100 local businesses in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra are putting on vegan meal deals and giving away free food samples for the Vegan Day Out. A map of each local area is created for punters to hit up during the event.

“You’ve heard of a pub crawl. The Vegan Day Out is a food crawl. Bring your friends and family out to enjoy trying the very best vegan food on offer at the lowest prices. There’s also retail outlets cutting prices on shoes, bags and more,” said Jessica Bailey, event organiser and Director of The Cruelty Free Shop, Australia’s vegan supermarket chain.

The Cruelty Free Shop will be offering up to 80% off hundreds of products storewide and holding free tastings all weekend, along with online sales at crueltyfreeshop.com.au. A record number of vegan businesses have signed up to this year’s Vegan Day Out, particularly lots of non-vegan businesses, reflecting a wider trend across the country.

“So many businesses are embracing the growing vegan movement in Australia by adding more cruelty free options to their offering. We have a fantastic eatery called Burger Hero in Canberra who are trialling a new vegan burger using a realistic beef-like vegan meat, the Beyond Burger, in a bright blue bun coloured naturally with blue spirulina. People are loving the concept. We expect it to sell out within hours,” said Jessica.

Jessica added that the event brings together vegans and non-vegans alike in a wonderful community celebration of food and ethical living that is a win-win for everybody.

Last month, 250,000 people signed up to Veganuary – a month long challenge to eat vegan food – compared to 168,500 in 2018 and just 3,300 in 2014. Businesses are doing their best to keep up with demand – with a 92% increase in the number of products carrying a vegan label in Australia between 2014 and 2016. Sales of packaged vegan food in Australia alone is expected to be worth $215 million in 2020, with demand coming from the 2.1 million Australians living a meat free life.
